Johan Dalene

Sunday Matinee

Description Program Artists

Hoping to shorten the three-week wait until Brahms’s love songs with Diana Damrau and Jonas Kaufmann, this morning will feature Brahms's “Love and Song Sonata” – as it was named by Max Kalbeck, the composer's first biographer. It is Brahms's Second Violin Sonata, which he composed in honor of the singer Hermine Spies. The otherwise reserved Brahms was unusually clear: “Allegro amabile” is his indication for the first movement, in which he concealed two of his songs, “Come soon” and the famous “Like melodies it steals softly through my mind,” which he also dedicated to the singer. Music that lingers with us long after the concert: young Swedish violinist Johan Dalene and British pianist Nicola Eimer will present the work as the highlight of their matinee program.
