A Streetcar Named Desire

Ballet by John Neumeier

Based on the classic play by Tennessee Williams: John Neumeier once again demonstrates his ability to transform a story into dance and tell it in an exciting new way. His ballet begins at the end of Williams’s drama, in a mental hospital. From here, the backstory of the young Blanche is told, her disintegrating Southern world and the sexual violence of her sister Stella's husband. "For me," says Neumeier, “A Streetcar Named Desire is one of the greatest works of American literature." Marcia Haydée danced the premiere – the ballet is considered a highlight in John Neumeier's oeuvre.
