Mozart: Requiem

Thomas Hengelbrock

Thomas Hengelbrock is a gifted exponent of sacred music. At the Festspielhaus he has conducted Mendelssohn's oratorios, Bach's cantatas, and the Mass in B minor. And once more he will be devoting himself to Mozart's Requiem. It is a masterpiece that unites different eras by blending Gregorian melodies, Handel's fugues, and Mozart's motivic treatment into something new: a work of art written to endure the ages. Incidentally, the work is a mystery – not least because the composer was unable to finish it. Mozart died while working on the "Lacrimosa"; his handwriting breaks off after a beautifully harmonized scale. An ascending scale – like a stairway to heaven.
