Ghost Light

A Ballet in the Time of Corona by John Neumeier; Music: Franz Schubert

Description Program Artists Related articles

Art as an expression of its time – a fitting description of Ghost Light, John Neumeier’s latest ballet creation. Ghost Light is an answer to the coronavirus distancing requirements affecting us all. Such answers can appeal to the senses, as the artist demonstrates in his analogy with a traditional Japanese meal: “a series of carefully arranged, hopefully ‘delectable’ miniatures” is how the choreographer characterizes the structure of his most recent work.

The Hamburg Ballet was one of the first companies worldwide to resume its rehearsals on the ballet stage after the shutdown. What began as an effort to integrate an elaborate hygiene plan into the daily ballet training regimen grew into a full-length ballet for the company’s entire troupe of sixty dancers, set to piano music by Franz Schubert. With the title Ghost Light, the work references an American theater tradition. After a rehearsal or performance, a metal stand with a single light bulb is placed on the stage, signaling that no artists are permitted to use it from that point. This ghost light remains on throughout the whole night, until the stage is once again filled with life.

Program

Please note: Neumeier’s latest ballet replaces the productions Night Pieces (3./4.10.2020) and The Lady of the Camellias (9.-11.10.2020), which cannot be rehearsed or performed under the current safety measures. Guests who have purchased tickets for these events will be contacted by the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.

Due to the current hygiene and distancing requirements, the seating plan of the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden has changed. In autumn we will be permitted, for the time being, to use approximately 500 of the 2000 usually available seats. Our Ticketing Service Center will select the best seats for you. In the event that we have to offer you a lower seating category, you will be reimbursed the difference.

We are required to personalize all tickets. For this reason, please inform us of the precise person(s) who will be using the tickets purchased by you. You can contact us by e-mail at info@festspielhaus.de or by phone at +49(0)7221 / 30 13 101.

Please remember to bring the ticket bearing the imprint “NEU” (“new”) to the event. We will be sending it to you.
