Death in Venice

A dance of the dead by John Neumeier freely adapted from the novella by Thomas Mann

Description Program Artists

We still fondly remember the premiere: John Neumeier's ballet Death in Venice, based on the novella by Thomas Mann, saw the light of day in Baden-Baden. The film adaptation of the ballet was also made here, but as always, nothing can compare to a live performance. Whereas the writer Aschenbach became a composer in the famous Visconti film version, with Neumeier we encounter a ballet master. The depth and originality of his version are already apparent in the choice of music. To Bach's Musical Offering and Wagner's piano music, the choreographer has conjured up a kaleidoscope of movements that sometimes even venture into the humorous. This journey to Venice will long remain in the audience’s memory, which is why we have chosen to set out again with the Hamburg Ballet.
