Is Cats a musical? A question that seems justified; after all, Cats doesn’t include speaking, but only singing and dancing. Like in Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte, the overture even imitates a fugue, there are leitmotifs, and the character of the elderly cat Old Deuteronomy is meant to be reminiscent of Sarastro, also from Die Zauberflöte. All these borrowings from opera show how eloquently Andrew Lloyd Webber creates magic with the means at his disposal. The musical is an art form of its own. All good reasons why we reserve a solid place for the genre in our program.
