P.I. Tchaikovsky: The queen of spades

Berliner Philharmoniker

The cards in The Queen of Spades, the wine in Cavalleria rusticana, the aphrodisiac in Tristan: in our modern times, intoxication is viewed as the evil twin of freedom. For the musicians and the production team of our Queen of Spades, this is where the real core of Tchaikovsky's art lies. He bet everything on the wrong card, says Herman in The Queen of Spades, meaning that he had the choice and failed. Ancient heroes and noble counts follow their predetermined path in life. In contrast, no God nor king can take away the freedom of the ordinary citizen, who ends up losing it himself in madness and addiction. This production centers around such voracious passions, in keeping with Tchaikovsky's music, which produces its own intoxication. For it is art that transforms overpowering passions into good style, civilizing it in the process.
