The awareness that nine marks a magical boundary informs the ambience of Mahler's symphony. It is in optimistic D major instead of D minor as with his colleagues Beethoven and Bruckner. Klaus Mäkelä, who left a deep impression with Mahler's Fifth at the 2026 Easter Festival, conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Mahler's last completed symphony.
