Yannick Nézet-Séguin & Joyce DiDonato

Symphonies by Gustav Mahler are solemn affairs. This concert, however, enchants us with Mahler's most beautiful orchestral songs along with a symphony that looks at the world through the eyes of a child. We actually ought to listen to this symphony in reverse, from end to beginning. In the last movement, which features the voice, all the images we heard in the first three movements are explained: the little bells of the lambs at the opening, the Grim Reaper with his violin in the second movement and, in the third, the heavenly Jerusalem. With DiDonato's vocal appearance, this concert is truly a must-hear. Whether delicate or childlike – she is an artist who draws from an abundance of colors.
