A concert performance of the most popular Ring opera. But why is it so popular in the first place? Wagner's Die Walküre is actually two operas in one: a tragic love drama between the siblings Siegmund and Sieglinde, plus a father-daughter story about Wotan and Brünnhilde. As always with late Wagner, it is a gigantic vocal symphony whose orchestral ideas (cellos for Siegmund, violins for Sieglinde) usually go unnoticed in staged performances. Last but not least, we have the famous “Ride of the Valkyries.” This is why Die Walküre has been the most popular of Wagner’s four Ring operas since its premiere – and can now be experienced in a fabulous cast at the Festspielhaus.
