W.A. Mozart: Idomeneo

Concert version of the opera

Description Program Artists

A musician has got to travel! This was no less true for Mozart than it has been for Thomas Hengelbrock, one of our house artists with whom we hope to realize exciting programs for years to come. The German conductor currently resides in the French capital and will now be inaugurating a personal project with us, entitled Baden–Paris. It starts with Mozart's most French opera, Idomeneo, which its creator considered to be his most important throughout his life. It is full of musical revolutions which the composer, leaving Paris and aflame with the latest French fashions, had learned from everywhere: plot and form from Paris, the language from Italy, the orchestra, a cradle of avant-garde experiments ("Mannheim manners") and equipped with brilliant winds, from Mannheim. Mozart availed himself of the best in order to create his best. This continues to inspire today, which is why we also feature leading musicians who travel from far and wide so they can bring the world to you in the Festspielhaus.
