Valery Gergiev I

Mariinsky Orchestra

Description Artists

When Valery Gergiev steps into the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, it's always a bit like “coming home.” A greeting here, a "hello" there: one is tempted to believe there aren’t 2,359, but two kilometers at most between the historic corridors of the Mariinsky Theater and the postmodern objectivity of the Festspielhaus. This neighborly feeling has existed in Baden-Baden for longer than you might think. Louise Maria Auguste, Princess of Baden married Tsar Alexander in 1793 and was entitled to call herself Empress of Russia from 1801 to 1825. As a consequence, Baden-Baden went Russian – and in Russia the Black Forest town is as well known today as Berlin.
