Mahler: Resurrection Symphony

Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich

It is the most popular of all the Mahler symphonies: the Second. The American entrepreneur Gilbert Kaplan, who died in 2016, was so fascinated by the work that he learned to conduct specially in order to devote himself almost exclusively to this symphony. Leonard Bernstein's emotional and physical exhaustion during the final chorus made film history – in other words, this symphony has already changed many lives. "Man lies in greatest need," sings the alto solo before the choir announces the resurrection: "With wings that I have won, I shall mount to the light! I shall die, so as to live!"
