Petrushka – Firebird– Sacre

Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra in concert

Description Program Artists

In Paris in the early 20th century, symphonies were worth nothing and operas little. Composers who wanted to be “up to date” wrote ballet music – and then performed it in the concert hall. The new times needed new rhythms. Like everything in France, ballets had to be short and sweet, with sparkling instrumentation, fairytale-like and/or scandalous. The young Stravinsky emerged as the king of this movement: with his three “Russian” ballets, which Valery Gergiev will present to us today. Buoyant music from Paris/St. Petersburg which combines the best of both worlds.
