Symphony of a Thousand

Gustav Mahler's "Symphony of a Thousand" is much admired yet little played. The reason? It is so monumental! More than 300 participants are gathered together on stage: a massively expanded orchestra with eight horns, additional brass, large percussion section, organ, harmonium, piano, and celesta, plus several choirs, a children's choir, and eight solo voices. After the symphonies nos. 5 and 6 were performed last season at the Festspielhaus under the conductor’s direction, the Mahler cycle with Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich is now reaching another high point.
