St. Matthew Passion

Hamburg Ballet

Three men are standing in the middle of a lively scene. Around them, many dancers are moving about, holding hands. They are all wearing white clothes.
John Neumeier's St. Matthew Passion, often described as a "seminal ballet," was premiered in the St. Michaelis church in Hamburg, which already underscores the special position this ballet occupies in Neumeier's oeuvre. Yet the choreographer sees it less as a sacred work than a deeply human one: "In view of the growing irreconcilability in our world, this thought gave me an important stimulus to engage with Bach's composition." A work of art in the spirit of reconciliation – today Neumeier's ballet is more topical than ever.
