Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra

Lisa Batiashvili, Maximilian Hornung, Lorenzo Viotti

Visitors to the Festspielhaus have met her often in recent years: German-based Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili, who this time around will be bringing along cellist Maximiliam Hornung as her duo partner. The two artists will be presenting a work of reconciliation. A long-standing dispute between Johannes Brahms and his friend Joseph Joachim led to Brahms’s Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra. The role of the composer is taken on by the cello, that of Joachim by the violin. We can hear how Brahms the loner caricatures himself, groaning and grumbling in the bass, and then in the slow movement finds harmony, reconciliation with the violin. A humorous work in a minor key!
