Sir Simon Rattle’s “Tosca” Debut in Baden-Baden

2017 EASTER FESTIVAL WITH THE BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER

The Easter Festival with the Berliner Philharmoniker will be taking place from April 7-17, 2017 at the Festival Hall Baden-Baden, the fifth installment since its founding in 2013. Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca will be the centerpiece of the Festival in a new production by Philipp Himmelmann (set designer: Raimund Bauer). Four opera performances and five large-scale symphony concerts will form the musical backbone of the program. Along with current principal conductor Sir Simon Rattle, audiences can look forward to concerts under the direction of future principal conductor Kirill Petrenko and Zubin Mehta. Sir Simon Rattle’s performances will include Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony (Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017) and Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra (Good Friday, April 14, 2017).

The Berliner Philharmoniker will once again be presenting their versatility in up to four performances every day. The orchestra can be heard in the opera pit only at the Festival Hall Baden-Baden. Chamber music ensembles consisting of Berliner Philharmoniker members either coming expressly together for the Easter Festival as well as long-established ensembles will be performing in many venues throughout the city. These include the world-famous Baden-Baden Casino and the Museum Frieder Burda, designed by Richard Meier, in addition to churches and other acoustically- and architecturally- remarkable spaces.

Since the inception of the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden, the Berliner Philharmoniker has also been specially committed to the Children’s Programs. The 2017 program will include the semi-staged concert Adventures Old and New. Students from Academy Opera Today will here be performing instrumentally accompanied vocal works for children by György Ligeti at the Akademiebühne in Baden-Baden’s Cité district. In addition, the National Youth Orchestra of Germany will once again be making a guest appearance. At the Musikfest on Easter Sunday (April 16, 2017, 6:00 PM), the ensemble, which features a selection of young musicians from throughout Germany, will be interpreting Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony. As in previous years, members of the Berliner Philharmoniker will again be mingling with the young performers, whom they have been accompanying on their artistic path for several years.

The 2017 Festival soloists are once again among the very finest: Kristīne Opolais as Floria Tosca, Marcelo Álvarez as Cavaradossi, and Evgeny Nikitin als Baron Scarpia will be filling the main roles in the new production of the opera Tosca. Violinists Lisa Batiashvili and Pinchas Zukerman can be heard in concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker on Good Friday, April 14, 2017 and Holy Saturday, April 15, 2017. As part of the Musikfest program on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter will be interpreting Lieder and chansons by Franz Schubert, Francis Poulenc, and Hanns Eisler.

With the chamber opera La tragédie de Carmen by Marius Constant, young musicians will have the opportunity to give their Easter Festival debut at the Theater Baden-Baden. Berliner Philharmoniker member Simon Rössler will be conducting the production, which is the fruit of a collaboration between Festival Hall Baden-Baden, Academy Opera Today, the Deutsche Bank Foundation, and the Theater Baden-Baden.

The popular chamber concerts at the Easter Festival Baden-Baden will begin on Saturday, April 8, 2017. The series will include performances by the Feininger Trio, Brass Ensemble of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Ensemble Berlin-Prag, Scharoun Ensemble, Philharmonia Quartett, Philharmonia Klaviertrio Berlin, Berliner Barock Solisten, Venus Ensemble, Philharmonisches Streichquintett, and Varian Fry Quartett. On April 13, 2017 at 2:00 PM, an Easter Festival chamber concert will be held at the Bürgerhaus Bühl (Neuer Markt) for the very first time – featuring musicians from the Orchestra Academy who will be giving their debut in the chamber concert series.
