“For me, Tosca is a gift. I would count myself among the hardcore Tosca audience,” said Sir Simon Rattle during the Easter Festival press conference.

Spring, flowers, 2017 Easter Festival!
As in previous years, 64 small and 25 large flower bags will be set up throughout the city for the Easter Festival. In addition, 27 flower pots planted with forsythias will be arranged in front of Festival venues. This year the remaining flowers will harmonize with the Easter Festival’s “midnight blue” color scheme and will consist of wallflowers, forget-me-nots, tufted pansies, pansies, southern daisies, tulips, and buttercups. The city will be blooming with a total of around 38,000 plants in blue, white, and yellow.

Tosca in numbers
On April 7, 2017  Tosca will be celebrating its premiere. Further performances will be staged on April 10, 13, and 17 at 6:00 PM. The church wall of the first act is very large, extending straight across the stage and measuring 12 meters high and 26 meters wide. In the second act, a part of it is raised upward – this part alone weighs as much as four cars. Around 40 technicians are responsible for its construction, which has already begun.

These stage sets weigh no less than four tons – as heavy as four sizeable cars! And in the second act, they simply disappear. Where do they end up? Find out at the TOSCA premiere on April 7, 2017.

Puccini’s opera thriller Tosca will be the centerpiece of the Easter Festival with the Berliner Philharmoniker. The orchestra will once again be joined by prominent names, with soprano Kristine Opolais singing Puccini’s title role and Sir Simon Rattle conducting the opera along with several concerts. We’ll also be welcoming the new principal conductor designate of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Kirill Petrenko. The program will feature two violin concertos with Lisa Batiashvili and Pinchas Zukerman – the second under the baton of Zubin Mehta. The music festival of the Berliner Philharmoniker will also be showcasing Anne Sophie von Otter. This year, the traditional chamber opera at the Baden-Baden Theater will be La tragédie de Carmen, adapted from Georges Bizet. And like every year, the whole city will be transformed into a stage: master concerts featuring members of the Berliner Philharmoniker will be taking place in numerous venues throughout Baden-Baden.
