Tschaikowsky: Pique Dame

A new staging by the Mariinsky Theatre

Natasha Razina

A crime novel set to music – a drama in which love and addiction are mixed into a fatal brew. Tchaikovsky’s “Queen of Spades” is perhaps the most mature opera written by the Russian composer and also one of his most loved works. The melodious composer shone here as the inventor of dramatic climaxes. He successfully created scenes that have gone down in operatic history. The fall into the Neva River of the ‘despondent in love’ Lisa, Hermann’s struggle with the Countess, the fatal card game. What’s it all about then, you may ask? It is, in fact, a ghost story about addiction to gambling, yearning for love, and an old lady who – when robbed of her erotic power – turns into a human demon and guardian of secrets. All of this set to simmering music in an eagerly anticipated new production.

In Russian with German and English surtitles.

Sponsored by Klaus und Kirsten Mangold
