Hammer blows and bells of peace.
The “Tragic” is the title often given to the Sixth Symphony, which translates Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” into Mahler’s unique individual language. With the symphony we travel to Vienna and then to the Alps. Cow bells ring as a sign of peace, a peace that is constantly under threat. Suddenly an image of Alma Mahler appears. At the end, powerful hammer blows resound, since when fate strikes in Mahler, it does so tangibly. The marches propel us onward, but also carry us away. The orchestra is enormous, but the music always transparent. Mahler makes demands of his listeners, but never turns away from them.
Performance ends at approximately 7:30 P.M.
