It’s no wonder Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic were inspired – had to be inspired – by Tosca, being the most brilliant of all of Puccini’s operas. The work is performed clear across the country, and that’s why we’ve asked the Berliners to perform it in Baden-Baden – since Tosca isn’t just a suspense-packed story, Tosca is a work of art. And with each passage as extraordinary as the next, it’s all the more important to do justice to the countless subtleties of the score. All the themes are interrelated, and Puccini is not only drawing from his endless wealth of ideas, but is also quite economical in the composing process – but could we ever really hear this before? It would be a pity not to. Since in this performance, we’ll discover a new masterpiece beneath the surface of the well-known melodies.
