Philippe Jaroussky

The Song of Handel

  • Sat11November18:00 H

It was by creating characters that Georg Friedrich Handel became one of the greatest of all opera composers – when a body is imparted to a melody, when a protagonist is not merely heroic, but also human. This is what Handel hid between the notes, and it’s up to the singer to translate this “in-between” into sound; once he has mastered the dizzying technical difficulties and knows them like the back of his hand, this music can have its full effect. And we’d be hard pressed to find a singer more proficient in this art than countertenor Philippe Jaroussky – the leading star in his field and long-time friend of the Festival Hall, whom we’ll be welcoming this evening on an excursion through Handel’s heroic roles.
