Mozart: DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE

Baden-Baden-Gala – Concert version of the opera

Tickets

Few musicians still believe in fairy-tales — but each and every one of them believes in Mozart’s Zauberflöte.

Mozart’s Zauberflöte is the radical antithesis of Figaro and Così fan tutte — operas set in Mozart’s time that deal with problems of concern to adults. “Adult aristocrats,” we need to specify – and then we begin to truly understand Die Zauberflöte, which is a fairy-tale for a new, middle- and lower-middle-class audience craving fantasy and eager to dream themselves away from drab everyday life into a world of princesses and bird people. And yet: in spite of the later Titus, Die Zauberflöte would become Mozart’s true legacy. A work that defies attempts to be understood logically, thus opening doors onto the unconscious. This makes it a fascinating counterpart to Wagner’s Parsifal and – as a single glance at the cast will make it abundantly clear – one of the highlights of this season.
