18th century Rococo music calls for refined sensibilities. We need only recall how it was written for a highly educated aristocratic audience seeking high-class entertainment. The two major composers of the epoch were Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – and this concert, featuring Isabelle Faust and Il Giardino Armonico, is dedicated to both. Among violinists, Faust has perhaps enjoyed the most spectacular rise to stardom over recent years. The Italian Baroque ensemble is entirely devoted to 18th century music.
Joseph Haydn was the inventor and grandmaster of the symphony – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, coming from the realm of opera, significantly enriched the “psychological” genre of the solo concerto. In this spirit, the evening’s program will include two middle-period Haydn symphonies and two violin concertos which, like all representatives of the genre, are counted among the composer’s early works.
Haydn’s 47th and 49th symphonies are like day and night. While the later symphony (“La Passione”) is a typical Sturm und Drang work, the Symphony No. 47 is characterized by its humor and is as entertaining as it is cultivated. Its nickname “Palindrome” refers to a minuet whose second half repeats the first half in reverse.
Violinist Isabelle Faust will be the soloist in Mozart’s first and last violin concertos. Both works combine light-hearted enjoyment with deep feeling: the Adagio of the Fifth Violin Concerto, for example, is among the most glorious in Mozart’s entire oeuvre.
