Grigory Sokolov

Piano recital

Not only Barenboim regards Sokolov as the king of the piano – during his concerts, critics and audiences alike are transported by the pianist, who completely transforms the instrument with his unrivalled touch. Sokolov is famous for his numerous encores, which often turn out to be the true highlight of the evening – following the official part of the program, the pianist casts off any tensions, offering these gifts to a grateful audience.

In the first half of the concert Grigory Sokolov will be playing three sonatas of Joseph Haydn which have in common their minor key which Haydn used rarely. In the second half the pianist will be playing two late sonatas by Beethoven: the Sonata No. 27, whose character seems to anticipate Brahms, and the Sonata No. 32, the final work and culmination of Beethoven’s piano sonata oeuvre.
