Das Lied von der Erde

Ballet by John Neumeier

“Das Lied von der Erde” is the culmination of John Neumeier’s involvement with the work of Gustav Mahler. The choreographer had dwelled on this work for years, which contains the composer’s most personal music and revolves around the two themes of love and death. Mahler’s Lied is a blending of symphony and cantata; the tenor part has been entrusted to Klaus Florian Vogt, one of the finest tenors of our time, testifying to the high standards of this production. The texts, all of them German translations of the original Chinese, are well-suited to Neumeier with his fondness for Far Eastern poetry. His work was already celebrated during its premiere at the Opéra Garnier – and now it is our turn to present the “enchanting, somberly beautiful Mahler choreography” at the Festival Hall.
