Bellini: NORMA

Staged opera

  • Thu10November19:00 H

Vincenzo Bellini

This production of Norma turns everything we’re accustomed to hearing upside down, but what else would we expect from an artist of Cecilia Bartoli’s stature? Norma is a soprano, Adalgisa a mezzo – that’s the way it used to be. But in the past, the vocal parts were actually reversed: Giuditta Pasta, who sang Norma at the world premiere, was a dark mezzo-soprano whose voice bore the imprint of life experience – as would be fitting for a high priestess – while Adalgisa, the young and naïve novice, was sung by a lyric soprano. This is much closer to the work’s original intention, and the production amounts to a new discovery of the opera. With this guest appearance of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival production, we render homage to one of the leading artists of our time.
