No, they’re not related, the two Avitals who will be joining together to make music on today’s program. Israeli musician Avi Avital is currently the world’s most well-known mandolin player. He performs Bach, contemporary music, concertos composed for him, and original works from throughout the world. His namesake Omer, who also hails from Israel and now lives in America, is a renowned jazz bassist; today we’ll also be hearing him on the oud (or ud), the oriental short-necked lute.

During the course of their international dialogue, Avi and Omer Avital will be weaving together musical influences from Morocco and North Africa, folk music, and Mediterranean rhythms, also incorporating elements from chamber music and jazz.
