Anne-Sophie Mutter

Violin recital

  • Sat28January18:00 H

Anne-Sophie’s Mutter’s solo program will be showcasing three violin sonatas, all works that responded to challenges from the world with sparkling elegance. Poulenc’s sonata, for example, was written in German-occupied Paris. But instead of expressing mournful regrets, Poulenc concealed the melody from “Tea for Two” in the piece – the fact that the American musical hit was illegal at the time lends the citation even more charm. The blues in Maurice Ravel’s sonata, in contrast, isn’t hidden at all, but out in the open for everyone to hear. And both Poulenc and Ravel draw from the example of Mozart, who alternates between humor and seriousness from measure to measure, and whose most important violin sonata will also feature in Anne-Sophie Mutter’s program.
