A highly anticipated announcement each year: who will be dancing the principal roles in the Russian ballets presented at Christmastime at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden? Now the eagerly awaited news has arrived from St. Petersburg. It would have been worthy of a dispatch like in the nineteenth century, when classical ballet gave birth to such marvelous works as The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, but in our day messages from the world of dance arrive in the form of a cordial e-mail. In it we read: on the opening night, Alina Somova and Vladimir Shklyarov will be dancing the leading roles in The Sleeping Beauty. Alina Somova attended the world-renowned Vaganova Academy in her home city of St. Petersburg. She was named a principal dancer of the Mariinsky Ballet in 2008 and appears in the major classical narrative ballet roles throughout the world. Her “prince” will be Vladimir Shklyarov, another Russian ballet star and also a home-grown talent from St. Petersburg. He has been one of the company’s principal dancers since 2011 – at the venerable Mariinsky Ballet, there is no higher honor. Maria Bulanova will be performing the Lilac Fairy. She is among the rising stars of the Mariinsky Ballet, having joined the world-renowned company in 2018. The second performance of The Sleeping Beauty (22.12.2019) will present Viktoria Tereshkina (Aurora) and Timur Askerov (Prince), with Anastasia Kolegova as the Lilac Fairy. In the third performance of The Sleeping Beauty on 23.12.2019, Olesya Novikova will dance the role of Aurora, with Kimin Kim as the Prince.

Change of scene

On Christmas Day the program will naturally feature The Nutcracker. In this performance, May Nagahisa will dance the role of the girl Marie and Vladimir Shklyarov that of the Nutcracker, who is fortunately transformed into a Prince. May Nagahisa attracted attention in 2016 when, in Monaco at the time, she danced a scene from La Bayadère at the age of just fifteen. Mariinsky Ballet director Yuri Fateev saw her in this performance and engaged the talented artist at the Mariinsky Ballet in 2017.

On the day after Christmas, May Nagahisa will once again be dancing the part of Marie, with Maksim Zyuzin taking on the role of the Nutcracker. On the evening of the same day, Alina Somova will feature as Marie and Kimin Kim as the Nutcracker.

On the final evening of the Mariinsky Ballet’s 2019 residency, the dancers from the Neva have prepared George Balanchine’s Jewels. The sumptuous ballet naturally also includes solo roles, which will be performed by the following artists:

Daria Ionova
Maksim Zyuzin
Anastasia Kolegova - Alexander Romanchikov

Renata Shakirova - Kimin Kim
Maria Bulanova

Viktoria Tereshkina
Timur Askerov
