The Baden-Baden Easter Festival is to be repeated from 6 to 9 May 2021 with a shortened programme.

"Despite the uncertain situation, it is a special concern of mine to be able to present Tchaikovsky's rarely performed opera 'Mazeppa' in Baden-Baden this spring with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Kirill Petrenko and a dreamlike cast," says Benedikt Stampa. The singers of all the main roles, including Olga Peretyatko (Maria) and Vladislav Sulimsky (Mazeppa), have already confirmed their participation.

Everything set in motion

Kirill Petrenko, principal conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, says: "Almost exactly a year ago it was clear for the first time that we would not be able to do our usual Easter Festival. So this year we set everything in motion - almost moved mountains - to be able to play an opera in Baden-Baden in 2021. To achieve this, we are even stretching the calendar and moving Easter to May."

"Seeing loyal audiences again"

If the state regulations then in force in Baden-Württemberg allow, the opera is to be performed in concert on 6 and 9 May. Two concerts by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra are scheduled for 7 and 8 May 2021.

"We are very happy that together with the team of the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden we will be able to present a compact as well as attractive festival programme with Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa, chamber music and symphony concerts in May," says Andrea Zietzschmann, artistic director of the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation. "This year's somewhat shortened residency gives the Berlin Philharmonic the opportunity to finally see its loyal audience in Baden-Baden again."

Advance ticket sales for these events are scheduled to begin on 9 April 2021.
