Soprano Sonya Yoncheva and baritone Christian Gerhaher are helping the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden impromptu with a short-term program change. Since the current travel regulations during the coronavirus pandemic prevent the mid-July residency of the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theater, Artistic Director Benedikt Stampa has developed an alternative program with the renowned singers. "I am very grateful to Sonya Yoncheva and Christian Gerhaher for showing themselves to be such helping friends of the Festspielhaus."

The internationally acclaimed opera singer will perform on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 8 pm as part of an opera gala concert in the Festspielhaus. She will be accompanied by the Würth Philharmoniker under the direction of Domingo Hindoyan.

Christian Gerhaher will present his Schubert lieder program Abendröthe on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at 5 pm. Gerold Huber will accompany him on the piano.

As of today, the events planned for July 22 and 23 have to be canceled. All guests who have already reserved or purchased tickets will be informed in good time. Guests for the previously planned events on July 24 and 25 will receive exchange offers or can book for the new programs.

Virus variant prevents departure from Russia

The traditional guest performance of the Mariinsky Theater has to be canceled this summer, as Russia is currently categorized as a virus variant area. It is therefore impossible for the artists of the Mariinsky Theater to leave the country. "It is extremely sad," says Artistic Director Benedikt Stampa. “Our thoughts are currently with our colleagues in St. Petersburg, who have been looking forward so much to their Baden-Baden performances. I hope that we will all meet again soon – at the latest, at the Mariinsky Ballet's Christmas residency, which is just as much a tradition. This is a fixed date."

A friend of the Festspielhaus

Sonya Yoncheva has enjoyed a longtime friendship with the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Here she sang Desdemona in Verdi's Otello at the 2018 Easter Festival with the Berliner Philharmoniker, and in 2014 interpreted Marguerite in Charles Gounod's opera Faust. In New Year's Eve concerts, gala programs, and other concert formats she has regularly appeared on the Baden-Baden stage with great success. Her international opera appearances from Milan to New York are among the highlights of the musical year. On ZDF, Yoncheva was admired in the Christmas concert from the Dresden Frauenkirche and as Violetta Valéry in La traviata. Baritone Christian Gerhaher has also sung several times in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Gerhaher is a sought-after performer not only as a lied singer and concert soloist, but also on the opera stage. He has been honored with the Laurence Olivier Award, the DER FAUST Theater Award, the Gramophone Award, and the Opus Klassik.
