Valery Gergiev wouldn’t have it any other way: he is intent on savoring the music for Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet from the first to the very last note. No wonder, because in this music Prokofiev captivatingly tells the world’s most famous love story – about two young people who don't have enough time for their love. It is rare for a concert to feature not one of the suites, but the entire ballet music. Three hours of amazement at Prokofiev's soundtrack for the imagination that effortlessly conjures up the most beautiful scenes from this vividly illustrative music – Valery Gergiev and his orchestra received a standing ovation at the opening concert of the Mariinsky Christmas guest appearance on December 18.

And the story continues: when the Mariinsky Theater returns to the Festspielhaus in 2022, instead of having to imagine all the action ourselves, we will get to witness thrilling, lyrical, virtuoso ballet on stage. The Mariinsky Ballet will dance Romeo and Juliet in the original choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky, which premiered at the Mariinsky Theater in 1940. This time as well, we will have to do without the happy ending that Prokofiev originally planned for the ballet – but we’ll still experience an unforgettable evening with Romeo and Juliet.
