TEODOR CURRENTZIS CONDUCTS "LA BOHEME"

When Puccini’s fourth opera La Boheme was premiered, its creator Giacomo Puccini may have already been 38 years old, but what did that matter? He felt young, chose, artistically-speaking, the side of youth (that is, he was a Wagnerian), and set stories about young people for young people. La Boheme celebrates friendship. And what’s more, it’s a genuine flat-sharing community opera! Not for students, but for artists – these young artists who enjoyed neither money nor success, living on air and love alone (and there was evidently plenty of both). The breeze that wafts through Puccini’s work remains fresh to this day in perhaps the best music he ever composed. While, in spite of all its brilliance, Tosca occasionally tends towards the sensational, La Boheme has almost classical ambitions: in the final act, for example, which integrates music from the first, thus beautifully closing the circle. The abundance of feeling is also accompanied by a generous dose of good humor – for every expression, Puccini finds characteristic, concise, perfectly-constructed melodies. The conductor in our performance is the new star in his field: Teodor Currentzis will be conducting his own orchestra musicaAeterna, which is based in Perm and follows its leader all over the world. And Currentzis takes this opera hit seriously, by consistently focusing on youth. He has brought together the finest young voices, all award winners and rising stars, realizing that their hunger for opportunities and recognition is precisely what La Boheme is fundamentally about. And since his spectacular discovery, Currentzis has channeled this hunger into overflowing expression.
