Winterreise - F. Schubert

Joyce DiDonato, Mezzo-soprano and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Piano

Description Program Artists

All events for the second half of the 2020–2021 season are still planned, but cannot currently be booked. Advance ticket sales have been interrupted. The current experience with the coronavirus pandemic has shown us that in the event of strong demand (above the currently permitted 500 guests), advance sales can only be expanded once the official approval has been given to open the hall accordingly. We will continue to publish or confirm the final program six weeks before the scheduled event.

Though Schubert’s Winterreise was originally intended for tenor or baritone, this shouldn’t be taken too literally. The lyrical “I” has never truly been limited to a specific gender. For this reason, the cycle was also sung in the twentieth century by female singers, including the very finest in their field. After Christa Ludwig and Brigitte Fassbaender, Joyce DiDonato will now be following Schubert’s sad wayfarer on his journey with no return. As a singer who approaches everything with the same earnestness – whether Handel or Mozart, Berlioz or Ravel, great European operas or American musicals – DiDonato seems predestined for this adventure. The artist will be accompanied by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who will be giving his Festspielhaus debut as a pianist.
