Valery Gergiev and Igor Levit

Münchner Philharmoniker

Description Program Artists

Brahms, Bruckner, Baden-Baden? It could have been so beautiful – but no, the Austrian never traveled to the Oos. Unlike Brahms, who completed several of his major works here and who, as is well known, did not know what to make of Bruckner's music. The aversion was mutual, with a single exception: Anton Bruckner thought very highly of his adversary's First Piano Concerto. The orchestral storms that the young Brahms unleashes at the beginning are quite similar to Bruckner's volcanic eruptions. This lack of restraint, unusual for Brahms, had a reason: Clara Schumann, who was portrayed by her luckless admirer in the second movement. It will thus be an emotionally charged concert program – presented by two exceptional personalities who will be appearing together in the Festspielhaus for the first time.
