For Beethoven, art was a religion and the symphony an act of worship. This is also evident in this evening’s concert, which brings together an actual mass with a covert one. Since this is precisely what the “Pastoral” is: the mask of a symphony conceals the celebration of a divinity present in nature. Bringing out such subtleties is something at which Thomas Hengelbrock excels. He is one of the artists with whom we will be collaborating frequently in the upcoming years.
