One of the reasons why we are dedicating this long weekend to Currentzis: the conductor’s Mozart recordings enjoy cult status among music lovers. Currentzis has rediscovered this music as something tremendous and unfamiliar. His sense of tonal color is kindled by details: like the basset horns that open the Requiem and that evoke a deathlike pallor. This nuance was highly unusual at the time of the work’s premiere and would not resurface until Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms.
