Teodor Currentzis

Description Program Artists

The standard concert repertoire usually begins around 1600 with baroque music. Why, actually? Teodor Currentzis asks himself this question as he takes us on a journey deep into a millennia-old past that goes back to the origins of the Western musical tradition. Specifically, back to Byzantine chant, which unites Hebrew, Greek, Syrian, and Armenian influences – sounds which likely influenced Gregorian chant. As always, the conductor is sure to have surprises in store for us, presenting unique ideas and mixing different styles to create moments of musical amazement. It will also be a reunion with some familiar artists: Currentzis’s Byzantine singers already impressed us all in the 2019 Mozart Requiem.
