G.F. Handel: Messiah

Oratorio in the original English

Description Program Artists

It’s still a while until our Easter Festival with the Berliner Philharmoniker, when we’ll be able to hear it again in Mozart’s Requiem: the Kyrie theme taken from Handel’s Messiah. Why did he include it? Before he died, Mozart harked back to Handel in order to create a bridge between different epochs. A turning point in the history of music: here lie the origins of our cultural canon. One of its shining beacons is none other than Handel’s Messiah, the life story of Jesus, eternally relevant, most frequently performed in the Christmas season thanks to its atmospheric pastorales and festive choral music. An oratorio that begins in Advent and looks ahead to Easter – presented in our concert by one of Germany’s finest Baroque ensembles, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin.
