For the musicians of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, tonight’s program is particularly close to their heart. With the ensemble’s Lithuanian principal conductor, who took on the post at the age of just twenty-nine, and young British cello star Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the orchestra embarks on a journey through British musical tradition. The centerpieces will be two popular works: Edwar Elgar’s fateful Cello Concerto and Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ dreamy Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. The orchestra will be framing them with works from both past and present, the latter by contemporary British composer George Benjamin, who depicts a stormy landscape in his Ringed by the Flat Horizon.
