“What makes me happy, more than anything else, is to be performing for my fans again” announced Rolando Villazón enthusiastically on his homepage following his recovery from an operation on his vocal chords. The tenor – displaying even more exuberant energy than ever before – will begin his comeback with a Handel program, recorded last year on a highly successful album released by Deutsche Grammophon. Villazón senses a sort of “kindred spirit” in George Frideric Handel, whose arias allow his voice to perfectly “breathe with the music” and “serve the character of the roles”. It comes, therefore, as no surprise that the lively Mexican is able to sing Handel’s music more authentically, spiritedly and with more crystal clarity than almost any other. At his performance in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Rolando Villazón will be accompanied by the period instrument ensemble “Gabrieli Consort and Players” and their musical director Paul McCreesh.
