Georges Bizet: "Carmen"
A new operatic production of “Carmen” by Georges Bizet is on the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden 2010 Whitsun Festival programme. Completed by Bizet in 1874, this “Opéra comique” is one of the most frequently performed works of musical theatre, and a revolutionary new version will be heard in Baden-Baden. Greek born conductor Teodor Currentzis will conduct the production using a new edition of the score, which has been drawn from original sources. Together with the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble – which specialises in historically accurate performances – Currentzis will free “Carmen” from all the clichés and routine interpretational approaches which have surrounded the opera over the years. Israeli mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham will undertake the leading role. The American Journal “Opera News” published the following about her: “The rich-voiced mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham was a fascinating Carmen. Shaham fully embodied the character, seamlessly weaving the arias and duets into the dramatic action. Vocally she went from strength to strength, with a particularly compelling “card song” in Act III.” ›› Tickets
