Georges Bizet: "Carmen"
A new operatic production of “Carmen” by Georges Bizet is on the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden 2010 Whitsun Festival programme. Completed by Bizet in 1874, this “Opéra comique” is one of the most frequently performed works of musical theatre, and a revolutionary new version will be heard in Baden-Baden. Greek born conductor Teodor Currentzis will conduct the production using a new edition of the score, which has been drawn from original sources. Together with the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble – which specialises in historically accurate performances – Currentzis will free “Carmen” from all the clichés and routine interpretational approaches which have surrounded the opera over the years. Israeli mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham will undertake the leading role. The American Journal “Opera News” published the following about her: “The rich-voiced mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham was a fascinating Carmen. Shaham fully embodied the character, seamlessly weaving the arias and duets into the dramatic action. Anna Netrebko will perform works including the famous “Stabat Mater” by Italian baroque composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi on Tuesday 27th and Thursday 29th July at 8pm.
