Mahler, with Jonathan Nott

When Mahler’s mammoth work is reduced to its very essence, the result is a song. No one knows his way around “Lieder” better than Jonathan Nott, who began his career as a singer and who often returns to singing to influence his work as a conductor – for example: to help deal with phrasing, to judge the amount of vibrato required, or in summary, to make music ‘breathe’. This is perhaps but one of the many reasons the Englishman has captured hearts and won prizes the world over with his Mahler Cycle recordings. Nott performs symphony upon symphony, as though he is constructing a puzzle – and for this he has long been celebrated, marvelled and admired by the Festspielhaus audience.
