The cello sonata by Claude Debussy is a dream captured in music – the dream of a Pierrot singing to the moon. To do this work justice it is insufficient to simply play it beautifully. Sol Gabetta and Hélène Grimaud will bring the characters to life, conjuring up old Spanish pantomimes in the minds of their listeners, complete with clowns and guitars – the latter into which the cello is repeatedly transformed. Could there not be a more fitting challenge for Gabetta and Grimaud, who together already outstandingly mould the traditional repertoire? The sonata is a fantastic musical canvas – especially for two true musical artists.
