Long live Flamenco! However, to ensure it will continue to live it must be developed further. Spanish choreographer and dancer María Pagés combines traditional flamenco with acquisitions from modern dance as, however rich and fascinating flamenco may be, it is threatened by its own tradition and will eventually stand still if not constantly cultivated and refined. Taboos were lurking everywhere – only a limited number of movements were allowed and the music was strictly stipulated. María Pagés had the courage to question everything, allowing flamenco to be danced to Shostakovich and ignoring all other prohibitions. As such she has quickly risen to become the most exciting choreographer on the Iberian peninsula.
