What a shame such a promising career should be cut so short! Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga was one of the most talented composers of the early 19th century – some even say he was a second Mozart. Imagine what he could have achieved had he not died of tuberculosis prior to his 20th birthday. In Spain, since his music was rediscovered, Arriaga has been considered a true musical national hero. Throughout the rest of the world his beautiful music – standing somewhere between Mozart and Schubert – is only now being assessed, and with highly positive results! The young Modigliani Quartet is undoubtedly helping the cause. Since winning numerous top-class international string quartet competitions, the four musicians have focussed on music from the 18th and 19th centuries and – as can be seen and heard – have unearthed some genuine pearls in the process.
