Mischa Maisky Portrait of an Artist II
The Soloist
Composer: Dvořák, Antonín
Mischa Maisky © Kasskara
Now and then even geniuses are not in the mood. Dvořák was happy to do almost anything - except write a cello concerto! However, his family had to eat and the cooks had to be paid so Dvořák undertook the assignment and composed the work. Initially he went about it routinely, but then – well, you know how it is – the work he had avoided for so long suddenly became fun. Such works rarely become classics although Dvořák’s first - and soon to be much loved - Cello Concerto is an exception. The composer failed to write anything as personal again and Mischa Maisky plays it equally personally – radically subjective. His CD recordings of the work are legendary, and he is now approaching the work live once again – he is ready to enjoy this eternally young masterpiece to the full.
