Maurizio Pollini never follows the masses. He is considered the ‘Pope of Pianists’ although - or perhaps because - he withdraws every accepted practice and dares to play Bach alongside Brahms and Boulez. However, his Bach sometimes sounds like Brahms, and his Brahms like Boulez, which is of course, not without controversy! This classicist eludes all classicisms in the same way as he refuses all heartache. Noble, perfect, direct – a master on every level.
